Road access:

From the A465 "Heads of the Valleys" road take the A469 to Bargoed. At Pontlottyn turn right onto the minor road at the staggered junction with the B4257 (adjacent to the railway viaduct). Continue up the steep hill. At the next junction cross over the minor road, and take the single lane track to take-off.

Parking:

Park along the edge of the track ensuring enough space is left for gliders landing, or being carried forward across the track.

Take-off:

A minimal carry to take-off. The take-off area is large and flat, and the hill has a nice rounded front. No real obstructions, but be aware of the high voltage power lines running along the bottom of the hill in front of take-off.

Landing:

The top landing area (A) is large, flat and free from any real obstructions. Paraglider pilots can also slope land on the front of the hill, but should be aware of the rough nature of the ground.

The bottom landing field (B) is large and slopes uphill towards the road. It‘s a long glide, and may be difficult to reach in strong wind on an intermediate glider. Please leave by the gate at the top of the field. In an emergency it‘s also possible to land on the very rough ground, just over the railway line, at the foot of the hill.

Flying:

Quite a nice site to fly when conditions are soarable. Wave is not uncommon, and good height gains are possible even in winter.

Hazards:

Watch out for the power lines running along the bottom of the hill in front of take-off, and the transmitter mast towards the South end of the ridge. Beware of the steep embankment on the approach to the bottom landing field.

Other rules:

None.

Site status:

Open site - This site may be flown by suitably insured visiting hang glider & paraglider pilots.
